“ Union Flag Bearer”
A one-of-a-kind original sculpture by Cheryl Bollenbach
17 inches
Union Soldier is dressed in clothing typical of the early years of the Civil War. His uniform is hand sewn of distressed cotton fabrics. He also wears a leather belt and a leather cross strap to support the flag. Over one shoulder he carries a painted cotton canvas haversack that contains a pear, hard tack and eggs; a “tin” army cup hangs from his haversack. Over the other shoulder he carries a “Cantel Patent” canteen covered in leather and constructed with 120 tiny rivets. His wool kepi has the white clover leaf insignia of the 4th Brigade, 2D Division II Army Corps. The flag that he carries has 34 stars and is accurate for the year of 1864.
His head, hands and feet are sculpted of polymer clay that has been hand-painted with meticulous detail in fine acrylic paint. The fabric body has been needle sculpted over a wire armature. He has a Mohair wig and a solid wood stand.
